Manager Support and Consultation

Because managers are expected to support people — but nobody automatically knows how to have the difficult conversations.

Managers are often the first person an employee approaches when something is wrong.

A team member is overwhelmed. Someone returns after a bereavement. Two colleagues are in conflict. An employee becomes tearful in a meeting. Performance has changed. Someone mentions their mental health. Or a manager simply knows that a difficult conversation needs to happen but isn’t sure how to approach it.

COS Corporate – Workforce Wellbeing gives managers somewhere to turn too.

Better conversations make better managers

Supporting people isn’t just about knowing mental health terminology. Often, it comes down to everyday  communication, confidence, emotional intelligence and social skills.

We can help managers develop practical skills including active listening, asking better questions, giving feedback, responding to emotion, managing different personalities, handling defensiveness, setting boundaries and approaching difficult conversations with greater confidence.

Sometimes a small change in language makes a significant difference.

Instead of:

“Don’t worry, I’m sure it’ll be fine.”

Try:

“It sounds as though this has really been weighing on you. What would be helpful right now?”

Managers don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes employees simply need to feel that somebody has properly listened.

Knowing when to listen — and when to act

Managers can understandably feel responsible for fixing problems brought to them.

Our support helps them distinguish between situations where they can listen and offer practical workplace support, situations that need HR or management involvement, and occasions when professional wellbeing or counselling support may be more appropriate.

Managers can learn to notice, listen, support and signpost — without becoming the employee’s counsellor.

Help before a difficult conversation

Managers can also access one-off consultation when facing a challenging situation.

They may want to think through how to approach an employee whose behaviour has changed, respond to conflict, support someone returning after illness or bereavement, discuss workload concerns or communicate an uncomfortable decision.

COS provides an independent space to consider the human conversation around the management decision.

We are not there to replace HR, Occupational Health or employment-law advice. Our focus is the communication, emotional wellbeing and interpersonal side of managing people.

Managers are employees too

Managers frequently carry the pressures of their team while dealing with their own workload and personal circumstances.

Sometimes the conversation begins with:

“How do I support my employee?”

and becomes:

“Actually, I’m struggling too.”

Where appropriate, managers can access confidential counselling themselves, separately from management consultation.

Building confidence, not dependence

The aim is not for managers to contact COS every time a difficult conversation arises. It is to help them build the skills and confidence to manage those conversations more effectively themselves.

Over time, better listening, clearer communication and healthier boundaries can contribute to stronger relationships, earlier conversations about difficulties and a healthier workplace culture.

Better listeners. More confident conversations. Healthier boundaries. Stronger managers.
